Jonas Lembrechts

Dr. Jonas Lembrechts is an Assistant Professor in Ecological Scaling at Utrecht University where he leads an international research team studying how biodiversity responds to environmental change across spatial and temporal scales. He coordinates the global Microclimate Ecology & Biogeography network, which compiles in situ microclimate time series data from over 120 countries, and co-coordinates the Mountain Invasion Research Network (MIREN) and Ecological Fractal Network (EcoFracNet), two networks focused on scaling up of biodiversity-related research questions. His research bridges ecology, biogeography, and data science, focusing on understanding how fine-scale climatic conditions shape ecosystems and species distributions under global change. Currently, his strongest focus lies on developing high-resolution global models of microclimate change to better predict biodiversity responses to accelerating local climate shifts.

Microclimate Change and Its Implications for Species Redistributions

Global climate change is often measured and modeled at coarse spatial resolutions, yet organisms experience and respond to climate at much finer scales. Microclimates - local temperature and moisture conditions near the ground - can buffer or amplify regional climate trends, creating complex mosaics of exposure to warming. In this talk, I will explore how microclimate change is accelerating in certain ecosystems, how these fine-scale variations reshape the distribution of species, and why ignoring them can lead to biased predictions of biodiversity responses to climate change. Drawing on global data from the Microclimate Ecology & Biogeography network and local and regional case studies, I will show how integrating microclimate dynamics into ecological forecasts can reveal hidden refugia, identify emerging hotspots of change, and improve conservation strategies in a rapidly warming world.
