Dr. Jiaqi Tan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University. His research focuses on the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that drive biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, with a particular emphasis on host-associated microbial communities. Combining laboratory experiments, field studies, and molecular approaches, his work explores how host-microbiome interactions respond to environmental change and contribute to the stability of ecosystems. Dr. Tan received his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Eco-evolutionary dynamics in experimental microbial communities
Microorganisms actively shape host fitness and evolutionary outcomes. In this talk,I will examine how interactions with microbial partners—both antagonistic and beneficial—influence the predictability and consequences of host adaptation. I will first discuss experimental work showing that the timing of microbial interactions, such as early exposure to parasites, can introduce historical contingency into host diversification, thereby reducing its repeatability. I will then highlight how eco-evolutionary feedback within microbiomes—where microbial evolution reshapes community structure and functional outputs—can alter host fitness across generations. Together, these studies reveal the dynamic and reciprocal nature of host–microbiome evolution and underscore the importance of incorporating microbial processes into our understanding of host adaptation and diversification.
