Japan leads the way for biodiversity

The Kobe Biodiversity Dialogue, from 15-16 October, will culminate at the 10th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) that will take place in Nagoya in October 2010.
The 300 participants from governments, international organizations, the private sector, civil society and academia are discussing the future of the diversity of life and how to ensure that future generations can also enjoy and benefit from nature.
“The 2010 Biodiversity Target to significantly reduce the loss of biodiversity by 2010 has not been achieved,” says Dr Jane Smart, Director, IUCN Biodiversity Conservation Group. “Some progress towards this goal has been possible due to collaboration with industry associations and companies on incentives for conservation. We must do far more for biodiversity in the next decade.”
“Participants in the Kobe Biodiversity Dialogue recognize the increasing environmental awareness of the private sector and its commitment to biodiversity conservation,” says Joshua Bishop, IUCN Chief Economist. “The addition of private sector efforts, to those of governments and non-governmental organizations, is an important achievement within the CBD strategic plan.”
Two events were organized by the IUCN Japan Committee recently. The 2010 Biodiversity Target symposium was held on September 6 at Tokyo University and the international symposium “One year before COP10-Post 2010 Target and Asian Vision” was held on October 10 at the United Nations University in Tokyo. Key stakeholders met at these events where Masahito Yoshida, Chair of the IUCN Japan Committee, and Jeffrey McNeely, IUCN's Senior Science Advisor, acted as co-chairs.
The Kobe dialogue will discuss options for the post 2010 biodiversity target and the findings from the Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity study. This study aims to be for biodiversity what the ‘Stern’ report was to Climate Change.
