Global Names and BC-CAS Meeting
Biodiversity Committee, Chinese Academy of Science Held a Meeting With Global Name
On February 20, Biodiversity Committee, Chinese Academy of Science (BC-CAS) held a meeting with Global Name. Prof. David Patterson, the Director of Global Name, Prof. Keping Ma, the Deputy Director and Secretary General of BC-CAS, Prof. Liqiang Ji, the Deputy Secretary General, and Prof. Yijian Yao attended the meeting.Prof. David Patterson gave a grief introduction of Global Name, which builds a multi-level of name data system, contributing to unifying and standardizing the species names worldwide and setting up a broader basis for biological information integration. He focused on the potential benefits that Global Name may bring to China and the contributions that Chinese scientists may make. He hoped that the Chinese scientific community could assume a more important role in the Global Name. Under the joint efforts of both sides, Chinese Academy of Sciences has established a mirror site of Global Names, dynamically updated database, opened the two main functional modules. This can be seen as the first step in successful cooperation.
After acquaintance with the latest developments and main functions of related software and databases, Prof. Ma made specific suggestions on cooperation mechanism, organizational construction, software development, data management and operational management, to promote the development of both sides. He said that BC-CAS would like to promote bilateral collaborations, make efforts to prove global biodiversity informatics and provide comprehensive data support and services to biology researchers.
Prof. David Patterson responded enthusiastically to Prof. Ma’s proposals. The participants of the meeting discussed in details and initially determined work plan for the next year.
