SUMMARY OF POSITION
Focusing on conservation of ecosystem services has become an increasingly popular strategy to protect not only biodiversity but also human well-being. A number of efforts at The Nature Conservancy and our partners are working on developing this approach. The
Great Rivers Partnership (GRP) is creating a new model for sustaining the world's great river systems and the plants, animals and people that depend on them. The
Natural Capital Project (NatCap), a partnership among The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and Stanford University, aims to build a scientific basis and broad institutional support, for protecting Earth’s vital life-support services, using innovative conservation incentives. Both projects are working to advance the science necessary for integration of ecosystem services into decision making and applying the approach at demonstration sites around the world, including China. The China Ecosystem Services Coordinator is based in China, and acts as the key point person for implementation of this approach in-country. Specifically, they will:
·Provide leadership in development, implementation and adaptive management of the ecosystem services approach in China, focusing on 3 scales: local, regional, and basin-wide or national.
·Implement the Natural Capital Project’s ecosystem services approach in China, supporting development of general tools and approaches through application in China, which will enable refinement of tools as well as achievement of real results in the field.
·Communicate with the full spectrum of key stakeholders, from government officials and scientific experts to TNC/WWF staff and local people to advance project objectives.
· Analyze and do*****ent process and lessons learned, and exchange information and experience with peers.
